Roelant Hollander

Roelant Hollander
THE NETHERLANDS

At the age of 6 Roel started playing violin but lost interest about 5 years later. In 1990 he got his first saxophone. Several years later he joined the “New Street Big band” on baritone sax and formed together with friends from that big band the “Minton Jazz Quintet” playing on tenor and baritone sax. In 1994 Roel discovered sequencers like Steinberg’s Cubase and started writing music using a PC and synthesizer. In 1996 Roel joined a Dutch ska band called Tiny Tones playing alto, tenor and baritone sax and writing some songs for this formation as well. Between 1998 and 2000 Roel studied at the Constantijn Huygens Music Academy (Jazz department) in Zwolle. During his study he started with “DJazz” project (then fusing Hip Hop and Jazz) and played with “Funk-A-Tac” (Funk band), “GNA” (a Drum ‘n Bass project), “Allotria Big band”, “C.H. Saxophone Quintet”, “Conservatorium Big band”, and several others formations. In 2000 Roel stopped playing saxophone (due to serious health problems) and stopped studying.

BULGARIA

In 2001 Roel immigrated to Bulgaria. The first 2,5 years in Bulgaria he did not play on his saxophones but continued writing music / creating beats. In 2003 – shortly after he picked-up his saxes again – he had his first performance in Varna, Bulgaria featuring at a concert of ethno-fusion formation Lot Lorien. In 2004 Roel started playing with the skacore band “Pizza” from Varna, but left the band in 2005. At the beginning of 2006 Roel started working and performing with the “Trip Collective” (Party band), “Trip Jazztet”, “Desi-re” (Lounge Project), and Deep zone Project. In January 2007 Dimitar Kalinov (a.k.a. VPD) and Roel founded the first Bulgarian union/collective of (underground) beat creators (composers of electronic music) named Trip-BeatMiks. The main purposes: Collaborations on (special) projects and boosting the underground scene in Varna as much as possible. Also the Jazz hop group “DJazz” was brought back to live. In 2008 Roel joined a new formation, the “Evolution Band” (live lounge/house). After the summer of 2008 Roel decided to leave the “Desi-re Project”, to take a different / new direction in music.

At present time Roel assists the sound/studio engineer Ivan Boyadzhiev, learning to become a pro sound/studio engineer, using Pro Tools 8. Roel works on some old and new tracks for “DJazz”.
